People 4. 11. 2026 New Publication: Laura Mafizzoli on Ambivalence and Political Protest in Georgia In a new essay published in Cultural Anthropology’s Hot Spots series, MEMPOP postdoctoral researcher Laura Mafizzoli explores how political polarisation in Georgia intersects with intimate relationships, everyday ambivalences, and conflicting loyalties, challenging clear-cut divisions between political supporters and opponents.
Blog post 3. 11. 2026 Southeastern Europe in ERC Projects: Insights from an International Workshop in Rijeka Our post-doctoral researcher Laura Mafizzoli was part of a meeting of nine ERC projects "Southeastern Europe in ERC Projects: Perspectives, Challenges, Scales" where the participants discussed how ERC-funded research can challenge established narratives about Southeastern Europe. Rewetting, landed power and populist contestation in an Austrian borderland” at the Workshop “Rethinking Landscape for Societal Transition”, organized by the AK Landschaftsforschung and held at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala from 24 to 26 September 2026.
Blog post 30. 8. 2026 Notes from dMSA Roundtable On June 4, 2026, MEMPOP team members came together for the roundtable "Memory and Populism in Borderland Regions in Eastern and Central Europe." The discussion approached populism from below and examined its relationship to memory, power, belonging, and ideas of the future. In this blog post, we retell the conversation and introduce the perspectives and fieldwork examples shared by each MEMPOP researcher.
Publications 27. 8. 2026 New Journal Article: Visibility of Labour and the Aesthetic of Opulence in The White Lotus In a new article published in Anthropology in Action, MEMPOP associated researcher Astrea Nikolovska uses The White Lotus to explore how the aesthetics of luxury tourism depend on making much of the labor that sustains them invisible, while rendering certain service workers selectively visible.
