“Memory Is Not History”: Anthropologist Johana Wyss on What Shapes Our Identity
On the 20th of July 2025, iDnes.cz published an interview with anthropologist Johana Wyss from the Department of Mobility and Migration at the Institute of Ethnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Wyss studies how collective memory shapes our identity and relationship to the past, focusing especially on the Silesian region—an area with shifting borders and a complex historical legacy. Her research connects personal narratives with broader social and political contexts, showing that the way we talk about the past shapes not only our present but also the direction we take as a society.
